Dance from Within. This is a way to express one of the core values of the dance, rooted in African-American culture. It brings the importance of self-expression in this dance. It is quite common to hide behind the moves, trying to portray a particular aesthetic that we picture in our heads of what it means to look „good“ in this dance, which is usually rooted in the stereotypes of our culture. So by doing that, we don’t dance ourselves, we dance an idea of how we should look or be (from the outside), and that is the complete opposite of expressing ourselves.
The main topics will be:
- How to approach the partner dancing from moment 0: everything we do communicates something (even if we do „anything“). Such as the attitude, the posture, how we embrace the partner, how we groove, etc. We will give some tips to explore these topics.
- Connection with the music: the music shapes our dance, and it’s at the core of our interaction. Developing a sensibility to it is key to a better understanding of the dance that we are doing. For example, to play with the different layers of each song.
- Connection with the partner: how to use each other to play with different dynamics during the dance. For example, understanding the difference between the energy we use to power ourselves from the floor and the energy we share with our partner. The goal is to develop a „togetherness“ in the dance without losing our individuality.
